Whether it's in life, career, relationships, and even working out, there are times where we wish we knew more. There are always lessons to be learned with each goal we accomplish that can be used for future success.
Having the right attitude and a few tricks up your sleeve can keep your fitness routine on track. Consider these tips to keep your head in the game.
- Do it for yourself. Research has shown that people who are "externally motivated" or go to the gym just to look good at a specific social event, usually don't stick with it. Those who are "internally motivated" meaning they exercise because they enjoy and love it, are the ones who stay in it for the long run.
- Stay patient and positive. Simply put, maintaining a new fitness level is a trial-and-error process. Your weight, energy and motivation level will fluctuate daily. It's best to focus on overall wellness and maintaining your fitness level from week to week. When you are finding it hard to muster up more motivation, remember why you started.
- Set Smaller And Realistic Goals. When it comes to fitness goals, it’s not just the final destination that matters. The journey is what makes the final destination rewarding. Sometimes the end can seem far away when you set big goals, that's why setting smaller goals instead can help keep you motivated to work out.
- Have A Workout Buddy. When your inner voice is telling you to hit the couch instead of the gym, having a workout partner can steer you back in the right direction and keep things fun. It's easier to bail out on the gym when you go by yourself than to bail out when your friend is ready and waiting for you there. Studies show you'll work out longer when you bring a buddy.
- Hydrate. When you work out, your body needs more fluids to replace the minerals and nutrients lost through sweat. Yes, you should be sweating during your workouts. Like sports drinks, half coconut water and half water is a great combo drink that contains electrolytes and hydrates your body. Another good rule of thumb is to know how much water you need daily. To do so, take your current weight and divide it in half. The number you are left with is the number of ounces you need to consume per day in order to stay hydrated. For example, a 130-pound woman would need to consume somewhere near 65 ounces of water per day.
- Be Smart With Rewards. A smart strategy for motivating yourself to reach your fitness goals is using effective rewards. However, be careful not to let these rewards get in the way of your progress. For example, using junk food as a reward for going to a yoga session may motivate you to exercise, but it may be lessening your progress in the long run. Instead, have a cheat meal on occasion because you want it, not because you earned it. Rewards that are not food-related are also effective as well. If you love to watch Netflix, do not allow yourself to watch TV until you’ve completed your workout for the day.
